The Institute for Climate Protection, Energy and Mobility (IKEM) is advancing the transition to sustainability in both policy and practice. Its research facilitates the creation of a legal, political and economic framework to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, expand renewable energy and promote sustainable development.
Topic 4. Resilient Water Systems Through Systemic Change, Policy Coherence and Inclusive Governance
The Institute for Climate Protection, Energy and Mobility (IKEM) advances the transition towards sustainability in policy and practice. Its research develops the legal, political and economic frameworks needed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, expand renewable energy and promote sustainable development. IKEM brings together expertise from a range of disciplines, including law, social sciences and economics. In addition, IKEM places a strong emphasis on scientific communication and engagement.
Regarding sustainable water management, IKEM is involved, for example, in the following projects:
NachH2 – Sustainable Hydrogen Production To support the sustainable use of water, the NachH2 project focuses on developing sustainability standards for the hydrogen economy. IKEM conducts legal analyses of sustainability in the hydrogen sector, identifies areas where legal frameworks need to be developed, and formulates policy recommendations.
WasSERDICHT – Heat Recovery from Drinking Water Systems The interdisciplinary WasSERDICHT research project investigates the recovery of heat from drinking water systems. In Germany, the use of drinking water systems for heat recovery is legally restricted. IKEM analyses the legal framework governing both energy and water use, while also examining factors influencing public and stakeholder acceptance of such technologies.
