New Diagnostics (ND) is a German provider of standardised, receptor-based yeast bioassays ("effect-based methods", EBTs) for detecting endocrine-disrupting and other trace substances in water and environmental samples.
Our test kits (e.g. A-YES, S-YES and related assays) quantify the combined biological activity of chemical mixtures at specific receptors – estrogenic, androgenic, progestagenic, glucocorticoid, thyroid and dioxin/AhR-mediated effects – expressed as standardised bioanalytical equivalents (e.g. EEQ). Unlike targeted chemical analysis, these assays capture the total effect of known and unknown/unregulated substances acting together, including mixture effects that chemical monitoring alone can miss.
Assays are ISO 19040-2:2018 compliant where applicable, fast (4–26h), need only basic lab equipment, and apply to drinking, surface, groundwater, wastewater and seawater. Results are supported by BioVAL, our automated statistical evaluation and reporting tool.
For Water4All Topic 1, our contribution is effect-based mixture-toxicity screening as a summation parameter complementing chemical/sensor monitoring (1.1), feeding standardised bioassay data into integrated assessment and decision-support frameworks (1.2/1.3).
We seek partners with hydrological monitoring, chemical analytics, AI/data integration or water-authority/utility access, to embed effect-based testing into a transnational monitoring concept.
Topic 1. Integrated Monitoring and Assessment for Sustainable Water Management
We are looking for partners to embed effect-based mixture-toxicity testing into a transnational integrated water monitoring concept under Water4All Topic 1.
Our contribution: standardised, receptor-based yeast bioassays (A-YES, S-YES and related endpoints: estrogenic, androgenic, progestagenic, glucocorticoid, thyroid, dioxin/AhR) that quantify the combined biological effect of chemical mixtures – including unregulated and unknown substances – in drinking, surface, ground- and wastewater. These bioanalytical "summation parameters" (e.g. EEQ) complement chemical/sensor-based monitoring by capturing real-world mixture effects that targeted analysis misses.
We propose testing effect-based screening alongside conventional monitoring data across at least two countries with different pollution profiles/water types, to show how bioassay-derived indicators can be integrated into assessment frameworks and decision-support tools for water managers and policymakers.
We are seeking partners who can contribute: (1) hydrological/hydrogeological monitoring infrastructure and sampling access in additional countries, (2) chemical/analytical monitoring data for cross-validation, (3) AI/data-integration and decision-support expertise to combine bioassay results with other data streams, and (4) stakeholder/end-user links (water authorities, utilities) for validation and uptake.
