a partner (for my project)
Main skills: systemic water assessment, hydrogeology, groundwater–surface water interactions, hydrological modelling, water footprint, water fingerprint, water quality, low flows, water residence time, hydrosystem resilience.

Our group at University of Rennes develops systemic approaches to assess and model water systems across scales. We combine hydrogeology, hydrology, water quality and integrated assessment to analyse interactions between groundwater, surface water, human pressures and water uses. We work closely with partners involved in water management, which helps connect scientific approaches with operational needs, decision-making and management strategies.

Our research covers groundwater flow and transport, groundwater–surface water interactions, groundwater contributions to streamflow and low flows, and hydrogeological modelling. We develop process-based and numerical approaches to quantify water storage, fluxes and connectivity and to assess the response of hydrosystems to climatic and anthropogenic pressures.

In parallel, we develop integrated water footprint and water fingerprint approaches. The water footprint aims at assessing pressures, uses and impacts on water resources, while the water fingerprint characterizes the state and functioning of hydrosystems through integrated physical, chemical and biological signals. Together, these approaches provide a systemic framework linking pressures, water availability and quality, impacts and management responses.
Topic 3. Smart, Secure and Adaptive Water Infrastructures for Sustainable Water Management
Topic 4. Resilient Water Systems Through Systemic Change, Policy Coherence and Inclusive Governance
We are developing a systemic framework for sustainable water management combining two complementary concepts: water footprint and water fingerprint.

The water footprint aims to assess pressures, uses and impacts on water resources, integrating water quantity, quality and their consequences for hydrosystems and society. The water fingerprint aims to characterize the state and functioning of hydrosystems through integrated physical, chemical and biological signals.

The ambition is to connect pressures, hydrosystem functioning, water availability and quality, impacts and management responses within a common framework, and to test this approach across contrasted European hydrosystems.

We work closely with partners involved in water management and are looking for complementary academic and operational partners, particularly in water quality and monitoring, socio-economic assessment, governance, ecosystem functioning, water management and case-study implementation.
