Our research team has long-standing expertise in freshwater ecology, with a particular focus on the monitoring and assessment of freshwater biodiversity and ecosystems. Our research covers the impacts of global and climate change, eco-hydrology and the role of hydromorphology in shaping ecological processes in rivers, as well as the ecological role of aquatic vegetation in supporting ecosystem functions. We also have extensive experience in ecological status assessment under the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD 2000/60/EC) and in the biodiversity, ecology, and conservation of freshwater macrophytes. The team has participated in national and European research projects addressing freshwater ecosystem management, biodiversity conservation, and the assessment of ecological status. Our ongoing projects include a leading role in the ecological quality assessment of Greek rivers using aquatic macrophytes as a WFD biological quality element, as well as research on the ecology, distribution, and conservation of rare and threatened aquatic plants.
Topic 1. Integrated Monitoring and Assessment for Sustainable Water Management
We are interested in joining projects addressing freshwater ecosystem management, biodiversity conservation, ecological status assessment, climate change impacts, and the sustainable management of freshwater resources. We are particularly interested in projects where our expertise in freshwater ecology, aquatic macrophytes, hydromorphology, biodiversity monitoring, and WFD implementation can contribute to interdisciplinary research and the development of practical approaches for freshwater ecosystem assessment and management. We are open to contributing as a research partner and to collaborating on both research and applied management activities.
