Topic 1. Integrated Monitoring and Assessment for Sustainable Water Management
Topic 3. Smart, Secure and Adaptive Water Infrastructures for Sustainable Water Management
Our focus is specifically on the practical perspective of river basin management. Lithuania is a low-lying country, and we face significant challenges related to small dams, hydropower plant operations, including hydropeaking, inland waterway development, and the construction of navigation locks at existing hydropower dams. Other important issues include dam removal, opening fish migration corridors, environmental flows, dredging, sedimentation, channel incision, and low-flow management. Conflicts over the use of rivers can sometimes become serious enough to end up in court. Our academic group, consisting of specialists in hydraulic engineering, hydropower, hydrology, and environmental engineering, is involved in both applied and scientific projects addressing these issues. Relevant stakeholders, including the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Ministry of the Environment (MoE), and water associations, support our work. If other countries face similar challenges, it would be very useful and interesting to join forces and work together to find innovative solutions. We are not addressing the scientific aspects of these issues here
