The Environmental Analytics and Pollutants group at TU Darmstadt offers field infrastructure, analytical capabilities, and pilot-scale capacity addressing contaminant fate along the urban stormwater–soil–groundwater pathway, relevant to integrated monitoring and nature-based water management.
Infrastructure: We operate a managed aquifer recharge (MAR) research site on campus for field experiments, long-term monitoring, and demonstration activities, enabling investigation of infiltration behaviour, soil–groundwater interactions, and contaminant transport under realistic conditions.
Analytical capabilities: High-end characterisation of organic and inorganic pollutants in aqueous, sediment, and solid matrices: chemical and microbial analysis of urban runoff, quantification of biocides, tire-wear additives, and heavy metals in rain, groundwater, and soil, and ecotoxicological assessment of toxicity reduction.
Pilot capacity: We can design and operate pilot-scale advanced oxidation process (AOP) systems as pre-treatment before MAR infiltration, using on-site soil columns to assess pollutant removal, disinfection, soil ecosystem effects, and AOP optimisation under realistic runoff flows. Seeking: Projects addressing stormwater contamination, MAR, or groundwater quality that would benefit from on-site analytical and pilot infrastructure. Available as project partner to complement consortia with expertise in catchment-scale modelling, nature-based solutions, or policy engagement.
