ICIMOD is a regional intergovernmental knowledge centre serving the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH). Its Resilient River Basins initiative combines Earth observation, climate-hydrological modelling and integrated river basin management with science-policy dialogue and inclusive governance.
For Topic 1, we contribute expertise in satellite-based basin assessment, SPHY/THREW modelling through research partnerships, climate scenarios, seasonal water availability, upstream-downstream linkages and water-energy-food-ecosystem trade-offs. We are developing H2CX, a cloud-based climate-water information and decision-support service to help institutions use basin evidence in planning.
For Topic 4, we contribute expertise in transboundary scientific cooperation, stakeholder engagement, policy coherence, gender equality, disability and social inclusion, and institutional capacity development. The Upper Indus and Yarlung Zangbo-Brahmaputra-Jamuna basin networks provide platforms for joint assessments and science-policy engagement.
Relevant work includes assessments of the Indus, Ganges and Brahmaputra basins, the Ganges Glacier-to-Ocean initiative, the HKH Rivers Outcome Document and blended IRBM training. We offer regional knowledge, partner networks and pathways for co-design and policy uptake
Topic 1. Integrated Monitoring and Assessment for Sustainable Water Management
Topic 4. Resilient Water Systems Through Systemic Change, Policy Coherence and Inclusive Governance
ICIMOD seeks to join a consortium addressing Topic 1 and Topic 4 through integrated basin assessment and inclusive water governance. Our interest is in linking observations, climate-hydrological scenarios and information on sectoral water use to practical decisions on sustainable water allocation, groundwater management and ecosystem needs.
We can contribute an HKH demonstration case, such as the Indus or Koshi, subject to agreement with regional partners, and support comparative learning with European basins. Potential activities include integrating Earth observation and model outputs, assessing seasonal supply-demand balances, developing water-accounting methods, and co-designing decision-support tools with water managers and communities. H2CX offers a developing pathway for making research outputs accessible to users.
Our basin networks can support joint evidence generation, upstream-downstream dialogue, policy coherence, inclusive participation and institutional learning. We seek an eligible funded coordinator and complementary expertise in crop-water modelling, groundwater, water accounting and governance. ICIMOD is exploring self-funded participation; scope and financing would be agreed with the consortium.
