Out team at Laboratory of Agricultural Hydraulics (LAH) at the Department of Agriculture, C.P. and R.E., University of Thessaly (UTH), has expertise in agricultural hydraulics, soil physics and sustainable irrigation water management. LAH combines laboratory experimentation, field investigation and mathematical/numerical modelling, with active use of tools such as HYDRUS, RETC and CROPWAT, to investigate the soil-water-plant-atmosphere nexus under agricultural conditions. Our main areas of expertise include: • Soil hydraulic properties, root-zone hydrodynamic research (vadose zone), impact on irrigation scheduling • Infiltration, soil water recharge, impact on groundwater • Deficit irrigation, irrigation scheduling, water-use efficiency • Predictive modelling, applications in irrigation water management • Irrigation-water quality, solute transport and leaching, potential pollution of groundwater, impact of pollutants on soil hydraulic properties • Evapotranspiration, crop coefficients, investigation of the soil-water-plant-atmosphere nexus • Laboratory and field experimentation LAH has access to the UTH experimental farm in Velestino, providing a Mediterranean agricultural environment for controlled irrigation experiments. We can provide soil moisture and matric potential monitoring, advanced field irrigation scheduling, evapotranspiration monitoring, data from the UTH meteorological station within the experimental farm and portable water quality monitoring tools.
Topic 1. Integrated Monitoring and Assessment for Sustainable Water Management
Topic 2. Nature-Based Approaches for Resilient Water Management at Hydrological and Hydrogeological System Scale
We are interested in joining Water4All projects addressing sustainable agricultural water management, smart and adaptive irrigation, soil–water–plant-atmosphere interactions and climate-resilient water use. Our team can contribute the physical and experimentally grounded understanding of soil-water and root-zone processes required for the parameterisation and validation of soil-water models, monitoring approaches, predictive tools and decision-support solutions for agricultural irrigation applications. We are particularly interested in multidisciplinary projects, where our expertise in agricultural hydraulics, along with advanced irrigation management and Mediterranean field validation can complement partners working on sensing and monitoring, Earth Observation, predictive modelling, digital twins or decision-support systems, AI in irrigation.
Open to Water4All networking and brokerage activities, bilateral online meetings, and relevant European research events focused on sustainable water management, agricultural water use, irrigation and soil-water processes. We are also planning to attend "Prague Spring with HYDRUS" in April 12-16, 2027, in Prague Czech Republic.
