Holds a PhD from the University of Pretoria and have 26 years of working experience in SADC region. Worked as an Environmental Economics Lecturer at Zimbabwe Open University, Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Venda, Senior Lecturer at Namibia University of Science and Technology, Senior Lecturer and Associate Professor in the Institute for Rural Development at the university of Venda. Supervised the graduation of more than 40 Master's and 19 Doctorate students in areas around agricultural economics, environmental resources management, water and food and nutrition security, climate change and variability, sustainable food systems, smart agriculture, and institutional economics. I have 75 articles in peer-reviewed journals, plus 6 book chapters, and have presented many papers at national and international conferences. Provided expertise in several countries of the SADC region after being contracted by NGOs, UN agencies, and the private sector. My area of research interest includes Water Security and Agricultural Transformation for Inclusive Green Growth, Governance of Smallholder Farmers Value Chains, Climate Change and Climate Smart Agribusiness, Natural Resource Economics for Sustainable Development, Regional Economic Development and Integration and Sustainable Food System and Social Protection. The University of Venda (UNIVEN) team brings a South African case anchored in local realities of water insecurity and governance complexity to the VALIDWATER consortium. This case study places strong emphasis on socio-economic feasibility, governance road mapping, stakeholder engagement, co-creation, and the implementation of pilot Nature-based Solutions (NbS) through engaged, transdisciplinary research. Our expertise in engaging communities, established relationships with households in smallholder communities and traditional authorities over the years places us at a fundamental position for implementation of VALIDWATER ideas and scaling up. Our previous involvement in the USAID PEER-funded project on “Water Security and Socio-hydrological Resilience of Rural Small-scale Crop Value Chains” and Water Research Commission funded project on “Utilisation of indigenous knowledge in sustaining water for humans and livestock in resource-limited communities” provides a strong foundation for supporting site identification, stakeholder mapping, community mobilisation, participatory data collection and interpretation of water challenges within livelihood systems. Because of field-based water security expertise, strong local government and community relationships, and transdisciplinary research experience, our team is uniquely positioned to ground the project's advanced monitoring framework in the lived realities of rural water users in water-scarce Southern Africa.
