My studies generally focus on process characterization in water and wastewater treatment. The major part is within the scope of environmental biotechnology with a special emphasis on nitrification, denitrification, biofilm kinetics, activated sludge kinetics, domestic wastewater, industrial wastewater and leachate treatment, inhibitory effects of specific organics and heavy metals on biological treatment systems.
I have conducted many studies on combination of adsorption and biological processes for elimination of specific toxic and/or slowly biodegradable organic pollutants. I have a book on this subject: Ferhan Çeçen, Özgür Aktaş. Activated Carbon for Water and Wastewater Treatment: Integration of Adsorption and Biological Treatment, 388 pages, ISBN: 978-3-527-32471-2, Wiley-VCH, September 2011. Content: http://www.wiley-vch.de/books/sample/3527324712_ftoc.pdf
I have also edited and written the following book: Ferhan Çeçen and Ulaş Tezel (eds.) (2017) Hazardous Pollutants in Biological Treatment Systems: Fundamentals and a Guide to Experimental Research, IWA Publishing; ISBN: 9781780407708, 386 pages. In last years, I am also working on the reuse of stormwater arising from industries. I would also be interested in the treatment of wastewater/stromwater to be reused in disaster cases such as earthquakes.
Topic 1. Enhancement of water circularity in industries
Topic 2. Urban water circularity
In last years I have been working on the following themes:
1) Combination of adsorption and biological processes for the removal of micropollutants from water (pesticides specifically) and from secondary effluent (pharmaceuticals specifically)
2) The treatment and reuse of stormwater arising from industries. In that respect, I would also be interested in the treatment of wastewater/stromwater to be reused in disaster cases such as earthquakes.
