Marine ecotoxicology and ecophysiology, with expertise in chemical contamination, bioaccumulation and biological responses in marine organisms, including commercial species and deep-sea fauna. Our research addresses established and emerging contaminants, marine litter as vectors of chemical contamination, and interactions between contaminant exposure and environmental stressors. We can contribute to Blue Bioresources projects through environmental sustainability and seafood safety assessments, including contaminant bioaccumulation and bioaccessibility, and the valorisation of seafood co-products, promoting their safe, sustainable and circular use.

Since 2022, I coordinate MoniPOL, a monitoring programme assessing contaminants in seafood from the Azores and generating data to support the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD). I am a member of the EU Expert Network on Marine Contaminants, with peer-reviewed publications on contaminant occurrence, bioaccumulation and biological effects in marine organisms, including commercial species.

PA3 - Promoting sustainable blue bioresources through innovation in marine production and harvesting

I am interested in joining projects under Priority Area 3 – Sustainable Blue Bioresources, particularly those addressing the sustainable production, harvesting, use and valorisation of marine biological resources. I am especially interested in projects focused on commercial seafood species, novel or underused marine bioresources, and the valorisation of seafood co-products within circular blue economy approaches.
I am also interested in contributing to projects that integrate seafood safety and environmental sustainability, including the assessment of emerging contaminants, contaminant bioaccumulation and bioaccessibility, and potential risks associated with the use of marine resources and derived products.
The University of the Azores can be a valuable partner in projects linking the development and valorisation of blue bioresources with environmental monitoring, ecotoxicology and regulatory frameworks, while providing an Atlantic/Azores case study for multi-sea-basin approaches. The strategic location of the Azores in the North Atlantic, together with its unique marine biodiversity and strong dependence on marine resources, provides an excellent setting for case studies, monitoring and demonstration activities and brings a valuable Atlantic dimension to multi-sea-basin projects.

I will attend the 8th International Symposium on Deep-Sea Corals, in Barcelona, Spain, November 2027, and the SETAC Europe Annual Meeting 2027, in Switzerland. These events will provide opportunities for networking and establishing collaborations in marine biodiversity, ecotoxicology, environmental monitoring and sustainable blue bioresources.
