I work on bioremediation in marine environment. In particular, on hydrocarbonoclastic bacteria (HCB), able to use hydrocarbons as preferential substrate for carbon and energy source. I study biodiversity of bacterial community associated to oil-polluted environment (Kill Spill project), HCB physiology and genomic features (Schneiker, et al. 2006 ), their commercial perspectives and constrains for their application (Tedesco et al. 2024) .
HCB become dominant member of marine bacterial community after an oil spill (Denaro 2021). But they colonize also algae (Denaro 2021)
HCB have developed competitive advantage to survive as production biosurfactants (tensioactive) (Crisafi 2016), siderophores (iron-scavengers) (Denaro 2014), polyhydroxyalkanoate (bioplastic precursors) (Crisafi 2020).
Recently we have demonstrated the role of HCB in the plastic degradation in marine matrices (Denaro 2020, Crisafi 2022).
HCB have several receptors that can recognize nano amounts of specific hydrocarbons (aliphatic, aromatic etc.) they have been used as biosensors (BRAAVOO project www.BRAAVOO.org and Euronews).
