The IMB group works with marine biomass processing, conversion by microbial and enzymatic tools, and applications of biomasses and biomass-derived products. IMB has particular expertise on macroalgae, but has also worked on residual materials from fish and shellfish and other types of marine isolates. The work includes biorefinery process development, preservation, biopolymer extraction and characterization, and application development. We have a large research portfolio on utilization of wild harvested and cultivated brown algae, including applications within food and feed, biomaterials/packaging, agricultural applications, cosmetic and biomedical applications. IMB has a large network of national and international research groups and industries/SMEs that can be included in collaborative projects, and state-of-the-art infrastructure platforms. The group is currently coordinating three ongoing ERA-BlueBio projects (PlastiSea, SNAP, QualiSea), and several national grants.
PA3 - Climate-neutral, environmentally sustainable and resource-efficient blue food and feed
PA4 - Green transition of Blue Food production
We are interested in all projects related to macroalgae/seaweed, application of biotechnological processing methods in blue value chains, and utilisation of side streams and residual materials from fisheries and aquaculture.
