The core role of the Merchant Shipping Directorate is to register vessels under the Maltese Flag this includes every description of vessel used in navigation, whether self-propelled or not, such as floating establishments, off-shore installations, including those still under construction. In our role as Flag State Administration, we can play a very active role in Research and Innovation Projects including: o Carrying out Analyses into how the innovative technology/ processes/ software being tested by the project may affect the current legal/regulatory/ administrative scenario and how this may be modified to accommodate the action being explored; o Perform analysis of any upskilling required with regards to crew and shore-side personnel to facilitate the uptake of the project solution; o Analysis of any retrofitting required on-board which may need to be installed to cater for the action being tested; o Analysis of what legal frameworks are in place which allow – or do not allow – such retrofitting and how these can be modified if necessary; We can also offer wide dissemination of project progress and results through extensive global stakeholder engagement.

The Malta Flag State Administration is open to participate and/or support projects projects which seek to develop technologies/ practices/ software/ processes which further the greening of the shipping sector, reduce marine pollution, encourage the take up of renewable energy by vessels, green off-shore structures and overall help meet climate change targets for the sector.
