Projects for sustainable aquaculture in freshwater and marine environments of the regions with some social fragilities and rich biodiversity, mainly in South America (Southern Brazilian Coast, Amazon River Basin, Uruguay River basin, São Francisco River Basin, etc.).
PA3 - Climate-neutral, environmentally sustainable and resource-efficient blue food and feed
Mariculture activity in Santa Catarina State coast (Southern Brazil) is closely linked to fishing activity. This context, within a global understanding of marine food chains, mainly linked to the application of low technologies, as in the case of aquaculture and small-scale fishing, needs to be better clarified from the perspective of food security in coastal regions. In addition, there is a need to understand the role of aquaculture and, in particular, mariculture, within the possibilities of ecological restoration (or degradation), in addition to its causes in fishing income for coastal communities in Brazilian Coast.
Therefore, this project aims to understand the fisheries ecology in areas where marine bivalve molluscs are cultivated in the coast of the Santa Catarina State (Southern Brazil), bringing a coupled view of these two activities, mariculture and fishing, as activities that share the same natural environment and therefore interact. For this, the idea of this proposal is to carry out three studies in the coast of Santa Catarina State: 1) Characterization of the fish community in areas of mariculture of bivalve molluscs; 2) Characterization of fishing in areas of mariculture of bivalve molluscs and 3) Identification of possible fish spawning and recruitment habitats in areas of mariculture of bivalve molluscs in the coast of Santa Catarina State. The project is open to replication in other coastal regions around the world.
