a project to join
The call concerns two research units within ARDITI: i) the Oceanic Observatory of Madeira (OOM) and ii) the Center for Marine and Environmental Sciences (MARE-Madeira)
i) OOM aims to become a center of excellence for oceanic research and monitoring, with a multidisciplinary approach in areas such as biodiversity, fisheries and aquaculture, remote sensing, meteo-oceanographic modeling and forecasting systems. Activities include leadership, educational and outreach, as well as data management and services.
ii) MARE-Madeira is part of one of the largest national research units, one of which is in Madeira, hosted by ARDITI, with ongoing projects in coastal ecology, marine litter, fisheries, climate change, and human-related stress factors. It's scientific areas include hydrographic basins, coastal and ocean systems, and their areas of intervention involve marine invasions, anthropogenic pressures, marine technology and artificial intelligence, marine megafauna, ecology of benthic and plankton, citizen science, ocean governance, literacy, conservation, restoration, and habitat mapping.
Ongoing project(s)include: HE-Mission-Oceans: CLIMAREST (Coastal Climate Resilience and Marine Restoration Tools for the Arctic Atlantic basin); HE-CL6-BIODIV: Marine SABRES (Marine Systems Approaches for Biodiversity Resilience and Ecosystem Sustainablity); H2020: GoJelly (A gelatinous solution to plastic pollution - concluded).
List of publications available.
PA2 - Development of offshore marine multi-use infrastructures to support the blue economy
PA5 - Digital Twin of the Ocean (DTO) test use cases at EU sea-basins and the Atlantic Ocean
ARDITI would like to join a proposal / consortium that focuses on the development and implementation of Digital Twins of the Ocean (DTO) for EU sea-basins and the Atlantic Ocean, e.g. aiming at creating a platform that can simulate the behavior of the ocean and its ecosystems (in real-time?), enabling decision-makers to make informed decisions that promote a sustainable blue economy.
Such consortium shall bring together expertise from different fields, including marine science, data science, computer science, and ocean engineering. ARDITI's research units, OOM, and MARE-Madeira, could contribute their expertise in remote sensing, meteo-oceanographic modeling, marine ecology, and artificial intelligence, among others. The proposed project should have goals and objectives aligned with the call's five priorities, but particularly with priority 5, in this case aiming to create DTO models that simulate ocean behavior and its ecosystems accurately, considering different sea-basins, including the Atlantic Ocean, where Madeira islands are located. We would also propose the project to address the challenges related to DTO implementation, such as data collection, processing, and visualization, and interoperability.
oceanic research and monitoring, transdisciplinary approach, transnational research and innovation projects, digital twins of the ocean, eu sea-basins, atlantic ocean, marine ecology, artificial intelligence, data processing, ecosystem simulation.
