We are two groups: Yeast Genetics and Biotechnology – the team has a collection of more than 300 lab, environmental and industrial yeast strains isolated from polluted environment, foods and feed. The main domains of expertise comprise: taxonomy, biodiversity and phylogeny of yeasts, characterization of yeasts with antimicrobial activity against plant and human pathogenic microorganisms, preliminary and screening studies for yeasts used as plant bio-fertilizers; yeasts involved in hydrocarbon biodegradation and soil bioremediation: cell growth and optimization of biosurfactant production using industrial and household wastes (hydrocarbons, vegetable oils), evaluation of biosurfactant antimicrobial activity, preliminary studies on biosurfactant phytotoxicity, lipid synthesis in yeasts with xenodegrading abilities;
Plant Genetics and Biotechnology - the main fields of expertise are: ecological and population genetic studies in natural and anthropic ecosystems, - complex genetic characterization of natural and cultivated plant species, establishment of the phylogenetic relationships between natural and cultivated plant populations using DNA markers (RAPD, ISSR) and specific computer program analysis, implementation of molecular techniques (PCR, simple and double ARMS-PCR, PAGE – Silver staining, sequencing) for different types of DNA markers (STR, SNP), - cytogenetic characterizations of plant material, |
