XNatura is the nature-intelligence division of 3Bee S.r.l., an Italian company (32 staff, Milan and Naples). XNatura operates a biodiversity monitoring platform that combines Earth observation with in-situ sensors designed and built in-house: Spectrum (acoustic sensor measuring pollinator flight activity, validated against pan traps: Alberti et al. 2023, Insects), Birdy (acoustic bird recognition with expert-validated species lists), Hive-Tech (honeybee hive monitoring) and camera traps. The platform computes, for any site and a 5x5 km control area, land cover at 10 m, Mean Species Abundance (GLOBIO), pollinator abundance (InVEST), 46 historical and SSP-scenario climate indicators, 25 physical-risk drivers and water-quality layers. More than 6,000 sensors are installed and about 17,000 sites in 21 countries have indicators computed. Our field protocol follows UNI/PdR 179:2025, a public reference practice on biodiversity measurement published by UNI. Public funding experience of 3Bee includes two direct European Commission grants (H2020 SME Instrument Phase 2 and EIC Accelerator), two ESA contracts, a LIFE project and a Horizon Europe project as beneficiary.
Italian companies cannot be funded under BiodivFuture, so XNatura offers to join consortia as a subcontractor of a funded partner, providing in-situ biodiversity monitoring (pollinators, birds, honeybees, camera traps), sensor deployment and maintenance, the data pipeline and satellite-derived indicators (land cover, MSA, pollinator abundance, climate and risk drivers) for the study sites. For funded research partners this comes at no cost to the institution: subcontracting of specialised technical services is an eligible cost under most Funding Organisations' rules, within their national caps. Relevant to Themes A and B wherever continuous, comparable measurements of biodiversity change are needed across sites and countries: agricultural landscapes, grasslands, wetlands, forests, post-disturbance and post-mining areas, Mediterranean coastal systems. We are also open to partners from South Tyrol (eligible for funding by the Autonomous Province of Bolzano) who wish to include in-situ monitoring through subcontracting.
