Marine biodiversity and plankton ecology, with a particular focus on microalgal taxonomy, harmful algal blooms (HABs), ecological change and biodiversity monitoring in coastal ecosystems. My research combines classical morphology (LM/SEM) with molecular and morphomolecular approaches, including DNA metabarcoding, eDNA, qPCR/dPCR, population genetics and environmental sequencing. I also have expertise in resting stages and microfossils, allowing present-day biodiversity patterns to be linked to longer-term ecological change.
I work extensively with long-term coastal monitoring data and emerging technologies for biodiversity assessment, including automated imaging, remote sensing and high-throughput sequencing. My research addresses species distributions and range expansions, the emergence of HAB species, impacts of environmental change, and the detection and characterisation of shifts in marine plankton communities.
I am looking to join an interdisciplinary project addressing biodiversity change and the emergence, development or functioning of novel ecosystems in marine and coastal environments, particularly under Themes A and B.
I am interested in projects investigating how climate change, warming, eutrophication, habitat modification, species introductions and other cumulative pressures alter marine communities, biodiversity and ecosystem functioning, and how these changes can be detected and understood across spatial and temporal scales.
I can contribute expertise in marine plankton and microalgal biodiversity, harmful algal blooms, species range expansions and ecological transitions, combining taxonomy and microscopy with eDNA/metabarcoding, qPCR/dPCR, automated imaging and long-term monitoring datasets. I am particularly interested in projects that integrate field observations, molecular biodiversity assessment, experimental approaches, modelling and/or remote sensing.
My interest is especially strong in projects seeking to move beyond documenting biodiversity loss towards understanding community reorganisation, species replacement, novel assemblages and the mechanisms and consequences of persistent ecological change. I would be interested in contributing to an existing project concept or helping develop a new work package focused on marine biodiversity monitoring, ecological change or early detection of emerging ecosystem states.
I will be attending several international conferences and scientific meetings relevant to marine biodiversity, plankton ecology and harmful algal blooms, including: International Conference on Harmful Algae (ICHA) – upcoming edition. I am also active in international networks on marine biodiversity, harmful algal blooms, microalgal taxonomy and environmental monitoring, and would be happy to meet potential project coordinators and partners at these events or arrange online discussions.
