SUBMON is a marine conservation NGO based in Barcelona and focused mainly in the Mediterranean Basin. We specialize in the study and conservation of cetaceans (distribution estimates, photoID, management measures, underwater noise), coastal underwater habitats (monitoring of seagrasses, coralligenous, impact by mooring and anchoring and improvement of policies, related invertebrates such as Pinna nobilis), and bycatch of vulnerable species and best handling and release practices. We involve local communities and stakeholders in all our work, with a special focus in stewardship, engagement and ocean literacy. We are looking for consortia that might need a coastal pilot area to carry out research, and to implement different actions together with the community. In SUBMON we have worked for decades in the study and conservation of Mediterranean seagrasses, mainly the Neptune seagrass and we know the ecosystem of stakeholders very well. We have implemented solutions, such as diagnostics of mooring fields along the Catalan coast, removal of moorings affecting seagrasses, and installation of low-impact mooring systems, and we have trained and advised local, regional and national administrations. There is still a lot to do, and it is interesting to identify the reasons why policies are not fully working, and how to work around it.
