Key Words:
Corals, Comparative Immunology, Resiliance, Stem Cell Transplantation.
Our laboratory research focuses on tissue acceptance by the immune system and stem cell transplantation. We are studying inflammatory processes in order to manipulate them in pathological conditions.
Uniquely in the lab, we are using biomedical tools in other fields. For instance, in a unique project, we are characterizing, isolating, and transplanting coral stem cells. The idea is to be able to isolate stem cells from heat-resilient individuals and to transplant them to sensitive corals, to enable resilience in the sensitive individuals under heat stress. In an additional project, we show that immune manipulation can prevent coral bleaching, by showing that this process is comparable to human transplantation immunology.
