Biology and Ecology of Marine and Estuarine Ecosystems, with a focus on bivalve diseases and their impact on host populations and ecosystem processes. My research also aims to enhance the sustainable management of marine resources, integrating ecological, economic, and social aspects through participatory approaches.
Marine Biology
Bivalves have high socioeconomic value in Portugal. Diseases and bio invasions harm populations and deplete stocks with far-reaching impacts on the regional and national economy. Using the Ria de Aveiro (Portuguese coastal lagoon) as one of the case studies, this project aims to build a co-management plan for shellfish conservation, sustainable exploitation, and restoration (where required) to boost sector governance and sustainability, with implications for the aquaculture industry.
