Latvian Institute of Aquatic Ecology (LIAE) is a research institute with expertise in marine and freshwater environment and ecology,. LHEI is responsible for national marine monitoring and data reporting in line with the EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive, has to contribute to the national maritime spatial plan and respective data collection. Research directions of LIAE include oceanographic processes, the impact of climate fluctuations on coastal habitats, marine biodiversity aspects and impact of alien species, patterns and fate of primary production, de-nitrification and nitrogen fixation, accumulation of harmful substances and eco-toxicological effects. Geographically LIAE is covering the Baltic Sea areas of Latvian jurisdiction in the Gulf of Riga and the Baltic Proper.
