Microbial ecology is my field of expertise, in particular the study of interactions between microorganisms, with a special focus on protists (microeukaryotes). I currently work with terrestrial ecosystems, but my original field is oceanography and marine biology. I am therefore familiar with both aquatic and terrestrial environments. I make extensive use of next generation sequencing technologies (ioTorrent, Illumina; RNASeq) in combination with more "classical" methods such as microscopy and cultures in the lab. Actual projects are mainly focused on agricultural systems and crop production, as well as the impact of environmental changes in the microbial community composition and interactions within.
