Biodiversa Joint Research Call 2022-2023 on "Improved transnational monitoring of biodiversity and ecosystem change for science and society (BiodivMon)"
My team is currently involved in long-term monitoring of rocky coastal communities along the west coast of Portugal. Our main focus are fish communities but we are also working with intertidal invertebrates and algae. The goal of these studies are baseline biodiversity assessments for the future establishment of marine protected areas (MPA's) along the Portuguese coast. We are working both in the intertidal using quadrats, transects and drones and also in the subtidal with underwater visual census (UVC). We regularly use DNA barcoding techniques to confirm taxonomic identifications. We have a successful outreach program on ocean literacy (www.kidsdive.pt) that is currently involving local stakeholders (e.g. municipalities and schools) on ocean protection projects.
